About Nongstoin 156-km and 120-km from Shillong is one of the best fishing. Shillong has very recently joined the bandwagon of adventure tourism. The Project Division of Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation has identified two trekking routes and backed up with exclusive photos, maps, trekking equipment and tents, all available in the Office of MTDC on Polo Road.

Anglican Cemetery
Ancient cemeteries lovers will enjoy Rilbong Anglican cemetery, with headstones dating from the past, including soldiers killed in the Lushai campaign in Mizoram.
Beadon Falls, Elephant Falls and Bishop Falls
Beadon falls and falls to the bishop, on the road in Guwahati Mawprem, north of 3 km and the Elephant Falls, set amid fern-covered rocks south of 12 km, are popular waterfalls and picnic sites, and accessible taxi.
Botanical Garden
Visit the “sacred groves” or virgin forests. The closest is the sacred Mawphlang as it is by traditional religious sanctions. Sohpetbneng Pico
Located at an altitude of 1343 m, 20-km from Shillong, regarded as sacred by the people Hynniewtrep, is in the midst of a panoramic view on the merits of the sacred forest. This’Navel-of-heaven’according Khasi mythology is a heavenly peak which offers to fill the spiritual void and emptiness, to those who seek and desire solace and peace of mind.
Spread Eagle Falls
Situated on the outskirts of the city, is a brilliant cascade, which resembles an eagle with outstretched wings. Therefore, the name spread eagle falls. The falls is quite steep cliffs on three sides with a lovely pool far below – a means to establish the nature of reassuring calm. The falls is locally known as “Urkaliar” or falling into Ka Liar slipped.

Lake Thadlaskein
Located 56-km from Shillong and 8-km from Jowai off NH-44, this captivating placid lake is a popular picnic resort. According to tradition, the followers of Jaintia Chieftain U lance Nangli dug the lake. The chief was a vast difference of opinion with the king of Jaintiapur, the Earstwhile Jaintia Kingdom which is currently the Jaintia District of Bangladesh.
Ward Lake
And if nature’s bounty was not enough, Shillong boasts of an artificial lake- Ward’s lake – right in the heart of the city. The lake, built by the Commissioner General William Ward in 1893-94, is a picture book lake complete with a white wooden Japanese as a bridge and fish that feed throng to Channa (chickpeas).

Scotland Of The East

Khasi-Pnar Tribes Homeland
Shillong, the home of the Khasi tribe Pnar has its origin in rooted myths. The most common legend traces the name of a young mythical Shillong, U Shillong, a young supernatural born out of immaculate conception of a virgin mother named Lir U Shillong or grows naturally and is the presiding deity of the city . The phrase “Khot Shillong” (Call Shillong) is a mantra of prayer in difficult times.
Another legend involves the Shillong deity, a supernatural being and his beautiful daughter who went on to become the “Pahsyntiew” (attracted by the flowers) mother, the queen of the kingdom Shillong after her marriage to a local youth Nongiri Kongor.

The legends may have vague roots, but few doubt that nature has been only partial in Shillong is concerned. Tall pines and gurgling mountain streams, breathtaking waterfalls that go with the name of Elephant, Crinoline, sweet drops, and the Bishop and Beadon twin. Then there are the lakes and gorges and caves combine to make Shillong tourist’s delight.
